I have been a Mac user for quite some time. There are three web browsers such as Safari, Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox which I use the most on my Mac. While Safari is easily the top-notch choice for me, Chrome and Firefox are highly impressive as well.

I download a number of files regularly. By default, all the downloaded files are saved in the Download folders. But, what if you want to save any file to a specific location? You can easily change the download location on Mac.

We have already made a post on how to change Safari’s download location on Mac. And now, we are all set to walk you through the steps to change the download location in Chrome and Firefox. Let’s sail through!

If you are using Chrome Browser to surf the internet and download files and want to change the chrome download location for Android and Windows, stick to the article. By default, Chrome download all the files in the dedicated folder known as Download. However, in some cases users may wish to download certain files in a specific folder. This can simply be achieved by changing the download location of the files being downloaded.

How to Change Download Location in Chrome on Mac

Step #1. Launch Chrome on your Mac.

Step #2. Next up, you have to click on Menu icon from the top right corner.

Step #3. Click on Settings.

Step #4. Click on Show advanced settings and then scroll down to the “Downloads” section.

Step #5. Click on Change and select where you would want your downloaded files to be saved.

If want to choose a particular location for each download, you need to select the “Ask where to save each file before downloading” checkbox.

How to Change Download Folder in Mozilla Firefox on Mac

Step #1. Open Firefox on your Mac.

Step #3. Select Preferences. (Alternately, you can also click on the Firefox menu at the top Mac bar, and then select Preferences.)

Step #4. Next, you have to click on Choose button at the far right.

Step #5. Now, you need to select the location that you want to set as the Default Download Location.

If you want to choose the download location each time you download, select Always ask me where to save files.

When using the Chrome or Safari browser to download files to your Mac, they by default go to the “Downloads” folder, which can be found in your user Home directory. However, due to disk space issues, or just by personal preference, you may wish to tell your browser to save your download files in another location. Here’s how.

  1. Open the Chrome browser on your Mac and go to Chrome’s Settings, either by choosing “Preferences…” from the Chrome menu or by entering “chrome://settings/” in the address bar
  2. Scroll down until you see the “Show advanced settings…” link. Click the link
  3. Again, scroll down a bit until you see the “Downloads” section. Click on the “Change…” button found to the right of the “Download location:” field
  4. Select the new location you where you want Chrome to save downloaded files to by default
  5. Exit Settings by closing the tab, and return to using Chrome as normal

How to Change the Default Download Folder Location in Safari

Set Chrome Download Location

  1. Open the Safari browser on your Mac and go to Safari’s Settings by choosing “Preferences…” from the Safari menu
  2. Click the “General” tab in the Preferences window that appears. (It’s the first tab on the left)
  3. Look for the “File download location” option. Click the pull-down menu to the right of the option
  4. Now, you can either click “Ask for each download,” which means Safari will prompt you for a save location each time you download a file, or you can click the “Other…” option, which will open a file browser you can use to select a new location you where you want Safari to save downloaded files to by default. Click “Select” to set the new location.
  5. Close the Settings dialog by clicking the red “X” in the upper left-hand corner, and return to using Safari as normal

Now, whenever you download a file using either browser, the file will be downloaded by default to the drive and folder you selected. I use a directory I made on an external hard drive. This keeps my main hard drive from filling up with downloaded files.
